Work in Progress

IMG_3739

Greetings! It has been awhile since my last post – 2015 is a busy year already!!!

I took a class on Creative Live taught by James Victore titled “Bold and Fearless Poster Design” a few days ago. He talked about being a creative person in general, not just in terms of poster design. My major take away from the class was the challenge to be sure I use my own voice to create unique and meaningful work.

Victore probably wouldn’t approve of this particular design – it is a bit cutesy – but I don’t really care because I enjoyed illustrating Sir Thomas Browne’s quote, and I feel good every time I look at it. Using crayons to complete this particular piece made sense because I wanted to embrace a playful approach to the illustrations. I am going to play with more designs that bring out other parts of who I am as a person and creator while continuing to work on illustrations that are simply pretty and happy – the world needs that too.

New cards are available in my shop (https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheFreeRangeArtisan). I posted new pieces that will be lovely little trinkets for Valentine’s Day too. I’d love for you to stop by!

A local art gallery will be offering my cards in the gift shop next week, which is exciting for me. I’m going to be printing and packaging them over the weekend… and playing with color and words whenever possible. In other words, I’m a…

May you embrace the wonders you carry within.

Life Moves Forward

I illustrated a new card design last night, and it’s now available on my shop. The focus is a lovely quote by Charles Carroll:

I’m going to move forward in continuing to work with illustration and lettering and to explore new ways in which my work can become available. There are other hopes I have for the new year, but those are for an entirely different blog. 🙂

May your new year be full of beauty, opportunities to create, and many good things!

Fresh Off the Presses!

We enjoyed a wonderful Christmas, and I hope that your own celebrations were full of joy and peace!

It’s time to return to work, and I’m happy to say that I finally added to my Etsy shop inventory.

I have a new collection of wearable hand drawn original illustrations (here are just a few):

I also posted a new card design:

Last night, I finished another illustration. The phrase “Fear Not” is one that I’ve been thinking of for awhile, but it wasn’t until watching my son’s Christmas play that I realized the way in which I wanted to frame it:

You can see pictures of the creation process in my instagram account: http://instagram.com/thefreerangeartisan

I’d love for you to stop by my shop to check out my fun and colorful pieces – let me know if I can put together something special just for you and yours!

Cheers!

Santa’s Workshop for Teachers

My son goes to an amazing school with wonderful teachers. We’ve been busy designing, creating, and choosing creations for these special people this week…

Bookstack Necklaces for the librarians:

A happy blue songbird for his music teacher and an upcycled pendant for his art instructor:

There are many perks to being able to make a variety of pieces, but one of my favorites is the ability to tailor a creation so that it suites someone’s personality. There are a few more gifts, but they will not be given until tomorrow – they are still top secret. My son is going to make his gift to his kindergarten teacher on his own this evening, so that will be even more special.

Happy Holidays!

One More… and Then Some

Ready for my Quincy customers!

I really enjoyed my time in Quincy. Before we moved, I was responsible for monthly art and craft sales. These events were great fun because of the amazing people involved. Many of those people were part of the sale on the 6th, and it felt very good to be a part of that community again. Thank you to those who stopped by to see our creations and support local artisans! This Saturday will bring the last art and craft sale of the season for me, and I’m looking forward to it as well.

I’m also looking forward to taking time to focus on some new projects that are stirring within after Saturday’s event.

Being the Free Range person that I am, I’d like to spend more time working with felt… and soap. My soaps are made using plant based ingredients with added tea tree oil. The roving comes from very happy sheep who live in Moab, Utah.

Felted Soap: Almost ready for packaging!

I also want to spend time illustrating new prints…

There’s a new project I started yesterday. I’m rather excited about it, so here’s a sneak peak:

IMG_20141211_082841_086

My son is busy with exciting projects of his own, and I want to be sure to make time to support his pursuits as well. I’m looking forward to drawing side by side in our upstairs studio over his winter break. For now, I’m embracing the time I have to myself. It’s amazing how quickly hours can fly by!

May your days be full of joy and color!

In Thanks

Standard

behind the scenes 264

Days and weeks are flying by! I have been devoting my time to several different projects, volunteering at my son’s school, and nurturing relationships. I’m going to take tomorrow and Friday to let my to do lists go, and practice gratitude for the good that is.

Next week will be full of preparations for a holiday sale in Quincy, Illinois that will take place on December 6. I’m looking forward to spending time with very dear friends and am grateful for the opportunity to participate in the event. The weekend after that will bring another art and craft sale in Jefferson City, Missouri, and I’m looking forward to that one as well. Let me know if you’re in either of those areas and I’ll give you the details!

I also hope to collect more stories for my newest venture: #WithMyClothesOn. You can learn more about that at: withmyclotheson.wordpress.com

Follow me on instagram (instagram.com/thefreerangeartisan) to see how the sale preparations progress!

#WithMyClothesOn

I’m not necessarily proud of this, but I read People Magazine online from time to time – okay, I check it every morning. Yesterday, I learned that Kim Kardashian plans to “break the internet” with a picture of her bottom, and I’m angry about it.

I’m angry because I’m tired of women showing their breasts and buttocks under the guise of female empowerment.

I’m angry for women who work very hard and are not compensated for their work in either payment or respect. I’m angry that celebrities and the politically powerful influence our culture and society when there are intelligent and experienced citizens from all walks of life with their own observations, ideas, and skills that are worth learning about.

Despite the anger, I want to do something positive and uplifting, and I need your help.

Let’s document ourselves as women taking action for good within our spheres of influence. Take a picture of yourself doing what you do – raising children, caring for a friend, giving a speech, volunteering, supporting someone, doing your job well, being creative – and use #WithMyClothesOn when you post it online. You’re invited to share a link of your post in the comment section – I’d love to see what you do with your clothes on!

I want to keep this separate from my work as The Free Range Artisan, so I’m starting another blog in which I will provide a platform to share stories about women who make our world better in unique and meaningful ways. You can contact me at withmyclotheson.wordpress.com. I’ll read your submissions as they come and will begin posting as soon as possible.

Let’s look beyond appearance and sexuality and honor meaningful action…

“… for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.”

– George Eliot’s Middlemarch

Let’s break the internet with our clothes on!

Moving Beyond the Anger to Embrace the Good,

Alexis

Fall Tree Practice

A colorful tree on a colorful lap!

I’m on break from a Creative Live class on how to use Instagram and just finished playing with color and shapes inspired by a fall tree I saw in a parking lot a few weeks ago. The picture of the actual tree is on my Instagram account:

http://instagram.com/thefreerangeartisan

I would share it with you directly, but I’m not sure how to download pictures from my phone to my computer (you can see why I need the class – and probably need several more), but it is a lovely tree and worth seeing.

It’s almost time to pick my chickadee up from school – it might be fun for both of us to create more colorful trees and experiment with different ways to shape the leaves. Perhaps we’ll make a forest! Of course, I have a very active son, so we may need to play dodge ball first. 🙂

Feel free to share images of the colorful trees in your world (real and imagined)! I would love to see them.behind the scenes 256
